Porpoises and Purpose!

We all need purpose in our lives don't we? Something to strive towards, a dream of a future full of happiness. Unfortunately (knew this was coming didn't ya?) what we want isn't necessarily what we get. Takes a long time to learn this lesson but it's something that generally holds true across the board. The good news about this however is that sometimes (i figure it's a fifty/fifty chance) what you get is actually better than what you wanted so badly that it blinded you to everything else around you. Took my baby cousin to tell me this. So armed with this knowledge I've done the one thing thats hardest for most people to do. I let go of purpose. Surprisingly it wasn't hard and it's infinitely less stressful letting tomorrow be what it will instead of trying to shape it into something we want it to be and worrying 24/7 about whether or not all our planning is having any effect. Because essentially it doesn't. The planning that is. Doesn't. Have any effect. The planning doesn't have any effect...sheesh keep up will ya! Anyway think about it. How many people do you know that've ended up in careers they didn't plan to? Or fell in love and then fell out? Or got married and then got divorced? Or thought they'd be rich by now? Or slimmer? Or happier? All that planning and worrying and for what? Put off today for tomorrow and all that happens is you lose today. And you don't get back a day. Period. I'm by no means advocating anarchy and the total abandonment of goals. We do need goals and we need to work hard toward them but we also have to remember to live our lives along the way. But thats another topic all together...because then you have the flip side of letting yourself go...you know the whole taking the living of life to the other extreme and becoming something you're not, becoming something ugly and repulsive...etc. etc. like i said next topic.

So anyway I went down the islands Sunday and it was beautiful. Blue skies, wispy cotton clouds, warm water in Chac, good company and food and drinks. Just what I needed. And the one thing that struck me then was that everybody wants to be famous and rich and successful and to what ends? To finally wind up right where I already was. Under blue skies, wispy cotton candy clouds, neck deep in clear blue green water, liming and having a blast. But that wasn't the highlight of the day. Nearing evening we decided to head back but first detoured into open water straight into a pod of porpoises. So streaking along at about 30 mph there we were in the midst of about twenty-something of them, just below the surface, jumping out of the ocean on either side of the boat inches from our outstretched hands. They were beautiful and totally fearless and obviously having a ball. And something else occurred to me then. The best moments in life aren't the ones that are planned but happen spontaneously and more often than not when you least expect them.

i think you have found the key.
truth is you have no control over the past because it's gone. you have no control over the future, because that's gone as well. you only have power in the now. and the realization of that is what eliminates stress, worry and all that other shit that planning and over contemplation brings.

as you said, it really isn't that hard.
matter of fact, it's as fun as hell!!
